Over time,\u00a0SQL Server Management Studio\u2019s Server\u00a0Dropdown box gets cluttered with many\u00a0servers.\u00a0 Quite often some of the servers no longer exist.\u00a0 However, SQL Studio does not give the user an option for clearing this list.\u00a0 I found this to be very frustrating.\u00a0 The instructions below show how this can be done.<\/p>\n

I tested these instructions with SQL Studion 2008 running on Windows XP and Windows 7.<\/p>\n

SQL Server 2008 running on Windows XP:<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Close SQL Studio if it is open<\/li>\n
  2. Go to C:\\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\\Microsoft\\Microsoft SQL Server\\100\\Tools\\Shell<\/li>\n
  3. Delete the file SqlStudio.bin
    \nThe file will be recreated\u00a0automatically when SQL Studio starts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    SQL Server 2008 running on Windows 7:<\/h3>\n

    1. Close SQL Studio if it is open<\/li>\n
